SAFE Grant Student Spotlight: Alaska Schubert, Geological and Environmental Sciences

Student and Faculty Excellence (SAFE) fund recipient
Project: “Society of Vertebrate Paleontology Annual Meeting 2018”
With the assistance of funding from the SAFE Grant, Schubert was able to attend the annual meeting of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology (SVP) in 2018. This included travel to Albuquerque, N.M., registration for the conference, and housing during her stay. This gathering is the largest meeting of vertebrate paleontologists in the world. Schubert traveled with a group of other Appalachian State University students and faculty mentor, Dr. Andrew Heckert, professor, Department of Geological and Environmental Studies.
Schubert was able to gain knowledge from the many research projects and lectures presented at the meeting. This information helped her better understand what kind of research she is interested in pursuing in the future, as well as what goes into conducting a major research project.
“Without this funding, I would not have been able to attend the SVP conference. Going to SVP enhanced my experience as a student because I was able to experience a professional conference as an undergraduate. I also met several well-known paleontologists at this event and learned what goes into a research presentation at this type of conference,” said Schubert.
