Project: “Modern Moonshine”
Funding from a SAFE grant contributed to Lippard’s creation of the index for the edited volume, “Modern Moonshine,” specifically by hiring a professional indexer. This volume offers the first examination of the rise of the legal moonshine industry in southern Appalachia. The book probes the causes and impact of the moonshine revival. With 11 essays, it chronicles popular figures of the moonshine industry and explores how and why distillers promote their product as “authentic.” Scholars from anthropology, history, geography and sociology make sense of the legal, social and historical shifts behind contemporary production and consumption, offering a fresh perspective on an enduring Appalachian tradition. With the index successfully completed through the help of SAFE grant funding, the edited volume was published by West Virginia University Press in March 2019 and co-edited by Lippard and Dr. Bruce Stewart, professor, History.
Two undergraduate students, including Brett Bolte ‘15, assisted Lippard in reviewing the construction of the edited volume and provided additional spot checks to the index. This opportunity allowed these students a look at the process of publishing an edited volume with a university press.
“Modern Moonshine” will be used in Appalachian classes focused on the history and culture of Appalachia. These classes include, but aren’t limited to, Sociology of Appalachian Communities and History of the Appalachian Region. Additionally, a copy will be permanently included as a secondary source in Appalachian State University’s Belk Library Special Collections.
