Brownfields are properties where the expansion, redevelopment or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant or contaminant. Barbara Alfano and Brad Atkinson will give presentations at Appalachian State University to discuss Brownfields Redevelopment.
The Environmental Protection Agency’s regional designation four serves the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and six Tribes. Barbara Alfano, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region four Brownfields Coordinator and Brad Atkinson, North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) Brownfields Project Manager will focus on Brownfields redevelopment discussing the EPA's and North Carolina DEQ's roles including private and public sector Brownfields success stories in North Carolina.
The EPA estimates that there are more than 450,000 Brownfields in the United States. Cleaning up and reinvesting in these properties increases local tax bases, facilitates job growth, utilizes existing infrastructure, takes development pressures off of undeveloped, open land and both improves and protects the environment.
The North Carolina DEQ is the lead stewardship agency for the protection of North Carolina's environmental resources. The organization, which has offices from the mountains to the coast, administers regulatory programs designed to protect air quality, water quality and the public's health, as well as works to advance an all-of-the-above energy strategy that fits North Carolina’s needs. The DEQ also offers technical assistance to businesses, farmers, local governments and the public, and encourages responsible behavior with respect to the environment through education programs provided at DEQ facilities and through the state's school system.
