BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State University is the nation’s top producer of Fulbright scholars among master’s institutions in 2019–20, according to the U.S. Department of State and Institute of International Education (IIE).

A float in the 1953 homecoming parade celebrates “50 years of progress.” Appalachian began as Watauga Academy in 1899 and then became the state-supported institution Appalachian Training School in 1903.
