Dr. Jon Gordon, Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology
Student and Faculty Excellence (SAFE) Fund Recipient: Fall 2021
Project: “Ethnographic Practices of Abductive Reflexivity and Inclusive Excellence”
Over the past summer, Dr. Gordon achieved all of the project outcomes as proposed in his College of Arts and Sciences Student and Faculty Excellence (SAFE) fund application. In particular, he and his undergraduate research assistants (URAs) were able to carry out 20 semi-structured interviews, each of which endured 60 to 90 minutes. The SAFE grant was used to compensate 20 interviewees with a $25 Amazon Gift Card. Gordon and his URAs have transcribed all of the interviews and have engaged in preliminary analysis of the interview data.
The project has afforded Gordon’s URAs with opportunities for learning the research process. It also centers student perceptions of inclusion in the classroom setting, so as to advance DEI initiatives on campus. Gordon and one of his URAs will present preliminary findings from this research at a Sociology Faculty Workshop on Inclusive Excellence, and ultimately bring new insights to how faculty can better understand inclusive excellence in their own classroom.
