SAFE Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Duygu Ercan-Oruc
Dr. Duygu Ercan-Oruc, assistant professor, Department of Chemistry & Fermentation Sciences
Student and Faculty Excellence (SAFE) fund recipient
Project: “Support for Workshop Registration: Foundations of Downstream Processing and Formulation”
Ercan-Oruc received a SAFE grant as support for the project “Workshop Registration: Foundations of Downstream Processing and Formulation”. However, due to COVID-19, the workshop was canceled and has not been rescheduled. Therefore, in May of 2020, the College gave approval to use this funding for experimental kits/supplies. With this fund, experimental materials that were used in research and courses were purchased for students.
“With the help of this fund, students will get more hands-on experiences in the semesters to come,” said Ercan-Oruc.
Because of the SAFE grant, Ercan-Oruc was also able to purchase a microbiological medium (M17) used to identify the lactic acid bacteria population during acid whey fermentation.
“Moreover, we have started to include new experiments in our courses and this fund helped us to purchase materials for these experiments,” explained Ercan-Oruc.
