Dr. Anastacia Schulhoff, Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology
Student and Faculty Excellence (SAFE) Fund Recipient: Fall 2021
Project: “Culturally Appropriate Care for Native American Elders in Tribal Nursing Homes”
College of Arts and Sciences Student and Faculty Excellence (SAFE) funds covered costs for substantive enhancements to Dr. Schulhoff’s manuscript, “Culturally Appropriate Care for Native American Elders in Tribal Nursing Homes,” which were essential for publication. Enhancements to the manuscript, such as book cover graphics and in-text tables and diagrams, were paid for with the grant.
“This funding helped me move one step closer to publishing my work with a university press, presenting it at conferences, and using the book about culturally appropriate care of older Native American Elders in my classroom to teach students about this very important, but overlooked, topic in the field of gerontology and sociology,” said Schulhoff.
Schulhoff will have undergraduate students in her Health Inequalities class read and review two chapters about social and cultural capital in Native American healthcare. She will also assign three chapters to her gerontology graduate students to review and comment upon the manuscript before final submission for publication. Both assignments teach them about culturally appropriate health care for Native Americans.
“The funding from this SAFE grant advances the university's commitment to Inclusive Excellence by helping me bring into the classroom an often invisible/overlooked minority population's experiences/voices. Native American Elder experiences/perspectives are not mentioned in textbooks or college classrooms. By supporting this work, the university supports the publication, promotion and instructional impact of my research with Native American elders and tribal nursing homes,” explained Schulhoff.
