New CAS Faculty and Staff Award

The College of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Office announces a new faculty award for outstanding accomplishments in Engagement, defined as representing the university to cultivate partnerships and initiatives that address community issues; enhance scholarship, research and creative activities; support curriculum, teaching and learning; and contribute to the public good. Engagement extends beyond outreach to include mutual benefit to all involved. Eligibility: All faculty (including tenure-track, non-tenure track, part-time and emerita) with at least three years of experience in CAS are eligible for the award.

Recognition: The award will carry the following recognition:     * $250 to apply toward engagement activities, such as travel or supplies (materials remain property of Appalachian State University)     * Medallion and certificate presented at The College of Arts and Sciences Faculty and Staff Awards Luncheon
Nominations: All faculty and staff, community members and external experts in the discipline or area of engagement are eligible to submit nominations. No self-nominations are allowed.

Nomination/Application Process: To nominate a faculty member for this award, please complete this NOMINATION FORM which will then be submitted to the CAS Selection Committee. Nominations should describe the impacts of the nominee’s engagement across the college, university, community or the faculty member’s profession over multiple years, including examples of demonstrated leadership, initiative and/or innovation in engagement.

Once nominated, CAS will contact the nominee for additional materials, including:     a) A cover letter that describes the nominee’s qualifications for the award with particular emphasis on leadership and initiative in engagements the resulting impacts     b) A current curriculum vita that emphasizes engagement activities     c) The names and contact information for two references Selection of Awardee: The CAS Engagement Award Selection Committee reviews the applications and makes a recommendation to the Dean of CAS. In the inaugural year, the committee will be comprised of three CAS Engagement Council members and two at-large faculty members. In subsequent years, the three Engagement Council members will be replaced by previous winners of the award until the committee is comprised of three previous winners plus two at-large faculty members. Membership is intended to be representative of each of the following areas: mathematics/natural sciences, social sciences and humanities.

Procedures and Deadlines: Deadline for nominations is September 25.
