App State celebrates 124 years of history with Founders Day festivities

BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State University celebrated its sixth annual Founders Day on Sept. 7 to commemorate the first day of classes held in 1899 at Watauga Academy — the predecessor of App State — and honor App State’s founders, B.B. Dougherty, D.D.

Faculty members and students from Appalachian State University's Department of Physics and Astronomy are the authors of a new paper in The Astronomical Journal, a leading peer-reviewed scientific journal in the field of astronomy published by the American Astronomical Society. The study, titled "TU Tau B: The Peculiar 'Eclipse' of a Possible Proto-Barium Giant," is featured in the October 2023 edition.
Dr. Robert Swarthout, associate professor in the Department of Chemistry and Fermentation Sciences and Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences, is the principal investigator on the project. Department of Physics and Astronomy professors Dr. Chris Thaxton and Dr. James Sherman serve as co-investigators.
