At the center of science, there sits a humble statistic called the p-value. It is science's castle wall, charged with letting truth through and keeping falsehood out. At least, that's the idea: in reality, an epidemic of questionable results is wracking science, and the p-value is at the heart of the crisis.
Ben Orlin is a math teacher, author and fumbling cartoonist. His first book, "Math with Bad Drawings," has been described by mathematicians such as Hannah Fry and Steven Strogatz as "glorious," "irreverent," and "staggeringly good." His writing has appeared in the Los Angeles Times, the Atlantic.com, Slate, the Huffington Post, the Chicago Tribune and elsewhere.
