The General Education Office is now accepting nominations for the following awards:
Faculty Award for Excellence in General Education Teaching (NTT): The award will be given to a part-time or full-time faculty member who is not on the tenure track at Appalachian in recognition for innovative and committed teaching in the General Education Program. The award comes with a $1000 stipend that may be used for travel, equipment, or other approved purposes for enhancement of the faculty member’s teaching and/or scholarship or creative activity.
Rennie W. Brantz Award for Outstanding Teaching in the First Year Seminar: The Rennie W. Brantz Award for Outstanding Teaching in the First Year Seminar honors a First Year Seminar instructor who demonstrates exemplary teaching and has made an impact on student lives in the First Year Seminar classroom. It includes a $500 stipend. Examples of Outstanding Teaching in FYS may include: Enthusiasm in the classroom; Evidence of innovation in pedagogy; Creation of a safe and open space in the classroom where students are free to take intellectual risks and form meaningful relationships; Demonstrated competence and expertise in the subject matter of the course; Connection of learning in the classroom to the life of the broader community.
Harvey R. Durham Outstanding Freshman Advocate Award: This award is given to a full-time Appalachian State University employee who has contributed significantly to improving the freshman experience on our campus. A modest stipend is included. Faculty, staff, and administrators with sustained contributions to the freshman experience over at least a three-year period are eligible for consideration. Nominators should consider persons who have demonstrated extraordinary personal commitment to freshmen, have provided effective classroom instruction to freshman classes, have shown dedication to programs that have supported and served freshmen, or have repeatedly exhibited exceptional individual commitment to freshman success.
Excellence in University College Student Advising: Excellence in advising is an integral component of the mission of University College. University College offers advising services to help students understand the curricular components and intellectual goals of the General Education Curriculum as well as major requirements. Effective advising includes assisting students in selecting appropriate and fulfilling General Education courses, understanding the complexities of academic planning and major selection, and developing ownership of their academic careers. The purpose of the Excellence in University College Student Advising Award is to recognize superior performance by a University College advisor. The award includes a $300 stipend.
Excellence in General Education Student Mentoring: Excellence in student mentoring is an integral component of the mission of University College and General Education at Appalachian State University. Effective mentoring includes promoting and fostering student learning, development and self-authorship. Such mentors equip, guide and teach students, helping them to learn, grow and develop as critical, creative thinkers and responsible, informed world citizens, often outside of the regular classroom environment. The purpose of the Excellence in Student Mentoring Award is to recognize superior mentoring performance by General Education instructors and University College staff. The award includes a $300 stipend.
Excellence in Community Engagement: Community engagement is an integral component of University College’s mission. Community engagement in University College includes faculty and staff whose activities promote the collaboration between institutions of higher education and their larger communities (local, regional/state, national, global) for the mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources in a context of partnership and reciprocity. The purpose of the University College Award for Excellence in Community Engagement is to provide recognition of outstanding accomplishments in community engagement and/or outreach activities by a faculty or staff member. The award includes a $300 stipend.
Transfer Champion Award: This award recognizes a faculty, staff, or administrator who has demonstrated exceptional advocacy and leadership in the development and implementation of transfer-focused activities (e.g., programs, policies, research) that have made a significant contribution to the improvement of transfer student access, persistence, and success. Transfer students represent approximately one-third of all new students as well as graduates of Appalachian. These students are traditional, non-traditional, military veterans, parents, full-time workers, part-time and full-time students, main campus and Distance Education students. The support by faculty and staff during their transition and tenure at Appalachian is critical as they navigate a new institution, integrate into a new community of friends and support systems, and achieve academic and leadership success. The recipient receives a $300 stipend.
