Appalachian State University’s Department of Mathematical Sciences was selected to receive the 2021 Progress, Accomplishment, Thriving, Hope (PATH) scholarship. The department received $25,000 which will be distributed to 26 students who are mathematical sciences majors.
“For too many students, even small financial difficulties can critically alter their journey and keep them from reaching their educational goals. Working with our partner institutions, these funds will have a positive impact on the lives of students and enable them to continue on their learning journey,” said President and CEO of Ellucian, Laura Ipsen.
PATH is provided by the Ellucian Foundation, established by Ellucian, the leading technology solutions provider for higher education. This program, created in 2020, provides support for students experiencing economic hardships and educational disruptions.
“The feedback was phenomenal from last year’s inaugural PATH Scholarship and we are pleased to expand the program to have a greater impact in the U.S. and around the world. Students across the globe continue to face ongoing disruptions due to COVID and other factors and we at Ellucian are committed to doing our part,” said Ipsen.
The PATH scholarship offers block grants between $10,000 and $25,000 (USD) to higher education institutions. This scholarship is eligible to four-year public universities within the United States, and for not-for-profit higher education institutions in certain countries around the world to apply.
In its first year, the PATH program provided 25 eligible higher education institutions with $500,000 in grants, delivering scholarship awards to a total of 680 students. This year, App State was one of 30 U.S. institutions across the country, along with UNCG in North Carolina, to receive 2021 PATH scholarship funds.
“We were so excited to hear that we had been awarded this grant from the Ellucian Foundation,” said Dr. Katie Mawhinney, assistant chair, Mathematical Sciences.
“The past year and a half has presented our students with so many challenges. The PATH scholarships were a way that we could offer tangible support to help our students overcome some of those challenges. Among our group of scholars are future statisticians, actuaries, teachers, researchers and data analysts. We are very proud of this group.”
