In 2014, Tessie Castillo became one of the first members of the public ever invited inside North Carolina's Death Row. For several months she taught a writing class to two dozen men convicted of murder. This extraordinary opportunity launched a passion to augment the voices of prisoners condemned to die. Currently a freelance writer based in Raleigh, North Carolina, Castillo still corresponds regularly with men on Death Row.
Castillo is the co-author of "Crimson Letters: Voices from Death Row," which she co-wrote with four men serving death sentences at Central Prison in Raleigh. She and two of her co-authors will share in a panel conversation about life on death row at this virtual event.
Frank R. Baumgartner, professor of Political Science at UNC-Chapel Hill and co-author of "Deadly Justice: A Statistical Portrait of the Death Penalty" reviewed the book saying, "Anyone willing to grapple with the realities, the flaws and the complexities of the American death penalty system should read this book."
Tessie Castillo is an international journalist specializing in criminal justice, drug policy and social issues. When she is not working as an advocate for reform, she travels the world with her daughter to anywhere featuring hot weather and good food.
