Dr. John Wagaman, Associate Professor of Mathematics, Western Carolina University
April 19, 2019
3-4pm
103A Walker Hall
This talk is free and open to the public.
This talk will allocate its focus to two different areas in which the presenter has recently worked and continues to work on. In the first part, WCU’s previous and current math placement models for students without prior mathematics credit will be presented, as well as results from a recent pilot study on the implementation of ALEKS as an indicator of mathematics preparedness for and success in college algebra. In the second part, the presenter, as a statistician and a nationally-certified volleyball coach, will illustrate some ways in which those skill sets intersect, in particular, concepts from data preparation, basic statistics and probability are used to revise existing metrics that evaluate volleyball serving and serve receive passing.
