  • Dr. Rachel Bleich, assistant professor in the Department of Biology, for "Crohn’s Disease-Associated Microbial Interactions Impact Biofilm Formation"

  • Dr. Brooke Christian, associate professor in the Department of Chemistry & Fermentation Sciences, for "Stabilization of Therapeutics by the Tardigrade-Specific Protein CAHS D"

  • Dr. Beth Davison, professor in the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies, for "Regardless of Means"

  • Dr. Joseph Gonzalez, associate professor in the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies, for "Cuba's Transnational Rebellion, 1868-1898"

  • Dr. Cuong Mai, associate professor in the Department of Philosophy & Religion, for "The Earth, the Waters, and the Souls of Dead Humans: Imagining Vietnamese Religions from 1300-1800 CE"

The mission of the URC is to stimulate, encourage and support research across all segments of the University community. The URC is committed to a broad and inclusive definition of research, including both basic and applied research as well as scholarly creative endeavors. Each year, a portion of the facilities & administrative (F&A) or indirect funds generated by external grants and contracts are used to support faculty research activities with grant awards of up to $5,000.

URC grants are awarded to faculty in the Fall and Spring. The deadline for Spring 2023 applications is Tuesday, March 7, 2023. For more information, visit research.appstate.edu/urc.

The A.R. Smith Department of Chemistry and Fermentation Sciences offers a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry, a Bachelor of Science in chemistry with eight different concentrations and an interdisciplinary Bachelor of Science degree in fermentation sciences. The department’s programs prepare students to attend graduate and professional schools, as well as for employment in the pharmaceutical and fermentation industries and other business sectors. About the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies
The Department of Interdisciplinary Studies offers graduate and undergraduate degrees in four program areas: Appalachian studies; gender, women’s and sexuality studies; global studies; and interdisciplinary studies. The Department of Sociology offers a Bachelor of Arts and seven Bachelor of Science concentrations (applied research methods; criminology; families and intimate relationships; health and aging; power and social change; social inequalities; and individually designed, which requires departmental approval).
