Truman Capote Scholarship: Call for Submissions

Appalachian State University’s spring 2021-22 Truman Capote Literary Trust Scholarship in Creative Writing competition is accepting submissions in all forms of creative prose. Submissions are due by 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 25 to Mark Powell, associate professor, Department of English at powelljm1@appstate.edu.

This competition is open to both rising or continuing juniors and seniors who are majoring in English with a concentration in creative writing. The winner will receive a $3,712 Scholarship for the 2021-22 spring semester.

This scholarship is supported by the Truman Capote Literary Trust Fund. Student submissions of prose (fiction, creative non-fiction or play) or poetry – the award alternates genres each year – are judged based on the most outstanding works submitted.

Novelist Annette Saunooke Clapsaddle will serve as the final judge for the competition. Clapsaddle is an enrolled member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) and resides in Qualla, North Carolina. She holds degrees from Yale University and the College of William and Mary. Her debut novel, “Even as we Breathe” (The University Press of Kentucky) was published in Fall 2020. After serving as Executive Director of the Cherokee Preservation Foundation, Clapsaddle (National Board Certified since 2012) returned to teaching English and Cherokee Studies at Swain County High School.

Clapsaddle is a participant in the spring Hughlene Bostian Frank Visiting Writers Series. For more information on this event and her work, visit https://english.appstate.edu/visiting-writers-series.
