International Conference in German-Jewish and Refugee Studies convenes at Appalachian State University

Appalachian State University Center for Judaic, Holocaust and Peace Studies has partnered with the Southeast German Studies Consortium to bring its thirteenth annual conference to Appalachian's campus. Some 50 scholars from the region will discuss new approaches in German-Jewish studies, refugee and forced migration studies as well as representations of German-Jewish history and culture. This year, the Center for Research on Antisemitism in Berlin, Germany, serves as a partner with a delegation headed by the Center's director participating in the proceedings. Director of Berlin's Center for Research on Antisemitism To Speak on "Race Defilement in Nazi Germany"

Director of the Center for Research on Antisemitism at Berlin's Technical University, Dr. Stefanie Schüler-Springorum, will speak on "Gender, Sex and Violence: Race Defilement in Nazi Germany." Her analysis of the Nazis' violent practices and dynamics demonstrates how and why they treated persecuted men and women differently, paying specific attention to "race defilement " propaganda and charges. Her talk is part of the Southeast German Studies Workshop organized by Center for Judaic, Holocaust and Peace Studies and the workshop's organizational committee.

About the Center for Judaic, Holocaust and Peace Studies
Appalachian State University’s Center for Judaic, Holocaust, and Peace Studies was founded in 2002 to develop new educational opportunities for students, teachers and the community. Located administratively within the College of Arts and Sciences, the center seeks to strengthen tolerance, understanding and remembrance by increasing the knowledge of Jewish culture and history, teaching the history and meaning of the Holocaust, and utilizing these experiences to explore peaceful avenues for human improvement and the prevention of further genocides. The Center for Judaic, Holocaust, and Peace Studies is an associate institutional member of the Association of Jewish Studies, a member of the Association of Holocaust Organizations and a member of the North Carolina Consortium of Jewish Studies.
