Faculty members and students from Appalachian State University's Department of Physics and Astronomy are the authors of a new paper in The Astronomical Journal, a leading peer-reviewed scientific journal in the field of astronomy published by the American Astronomical Society. The study, titled "TU Tau B: The Peculiar 'Eclipse' of a Possible Proto-Barium Giant," is featured in the October 2023 edition.
Dr. Robert Swarthout, associate professor in the Department of Chemistry and Fermentation Sciences and Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences, is the principal investigator on the project. Department of Physics and Astronomy professors Dr. Chris Thaxton and Dr. James Sherman serve as co-investigators.

BOONE, N.C. — A group of faculty members from the Appalachian State University College of Arts and Sciences has been awarded a three-year grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) totaling over $530,000.

The 1.5-meter telescope housed in the University of the Free State’s Boyden Observatory in South Africa. App State professor emeritus and astrophysicist Dr. Richard Gray designed and built a spectrograph for the telescope, which he installed and commissioned this spring.
