Art Seminar Dives Into Life, Shtetl and Symbolism of Marc Chagall’s Work

Tucked away beneath the stairs, a lecture room held a large crowd facing four professors, surrounded by digitally displayed artwork. Colorful, complex pieces captured the audience’s attention until one of the professors stood up. A hush fell over the crowd, and the seminar began.

BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State University recognized more than 1,500 Mountaineer graduates during its Fall Commencement ceremonies, held Dec. 15 at the Holmes Convocation Center.

Marc Chagall (1887-1985), a Russian-born artist who spent most of his career in France (except when exiled to New York during the Holocaust). Chagall is best known for his paintings of Paris and for stained glass windows that adorn cathedrals around the world. This event will focus on his representations of shtetl (“little town”) life and the Jewish diaspora.
