Dr. Lindsay Masland, was recognized by the Society for the Teaching of Psychology (Division 2 of the American Psychological Association) with the 2020 Jane S. Halonen Teaching Excellence Award.

At the STP 19th Annual Conference on Teaching (ACT), slated for October 2020, Masland will be presented with a plaque to acknowledge her merit. Each year, the STP awards six individuals nationally for their excellence in psychological teachings. The Jane S. Halonen Teaching Excellence award recognizes the excellence of early career psychologists. In addition, Masland and other winners will receive a $1,500 teaching award. The award recipients will also be announced in the October issue of Teaching of Psychology.

“There are many great teachers in STP. And yet, Lindsay is the person I go to when I need teaching advice…It is an honor to know her, to work with her and nominate her for the Jane Halonen Award. I cannot imagine a more fitting candidate,” said Dr. Jordan D. Troisi, Department of Psychology at Sewanee University, in her nomination letter.

Since joining Appalachian State University’s faculty in 2011, Masland has been a keynote speaker at the annual Eastern Teaching of Psychology (ETOP) Conference, held in Staunton, Virginia and for the Annual Conference on Teaching. Masland serves as a Consulting Editor for two journals, Teaching of Psychology and Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in Psychology, that both focus on the scholarship of teaching and learning. Masland was also recently named as incoming Assistant Director of Faculty and Professional Development through Appalachian’s Center for Academic Excellence.

“My interests lie at the intersection of student engagement, effective teaching practices and inclusive excellence. My passion is to help educators make sound instructional choices that lead to transformative educational experiences for the many types of students they have in their classrooms. I try to bring my background of educational psychology and knowledge of the science behind teaching/learning to bear on every aspect of my teaching, research and service,”said Masland.

Masland received her P.h.D. from The University of Georgia and both M.A. and B.A. from Wake Forest University. Masland’s research focuses include student engagement, effective teaching practices and inclusive excellence in the classroom. Masland currently serves on 10 of Appalachian’s departmental committees committed to teaching excellence.
