David Hodgin Writing Award: Call for Submissions

Submissions for this Department of English competition are due Monday, May 11, 2020 as anonymous attachments to english@appstate.edu with the subject, David Hodgin Award.

The David Hodgin Writing Award Competition, funded with a generous donation by Maxine McCall, calls on the talent of all interested English majors. With each coming year, this new inaugural competition will provide a prompt centered around the various aspects currently affecting the community. This year, with the hope of bringing some positivity to the academic community, the prompt centers around exploring the ways our lives have changed or been affected since the start of the recent pandemic and how society itself may improve as a result.

Undergraduate and graduate students may submit original work to either the prose or poetry category with a maximum length of 1,500 words and one submission per person, per category. The entries will be judged by student representatives.

Winners of each category will be awarded with a scholarship of $350. Through the Department of English’s collaboration with Cold Mountain Review the winners will also receive online publications with this literary journal. For additional questions, please email Susan Weinberg, weinbergsc@appstate.edu
