Biology Seminar Series hosts Computer Science Faculty and Beekeeper James Wilkes

Wednesday, March 20, 2019
4 p.m.

Rankin Science West, Room 183

Dr. James Wilkes of the Department of Computer Science, will be presenting a talk titled, "Honey Bee Health, Almonds, Fake Honey, Pesticides: Can Technology Help?"

James T. Wilkes, PhD, is a beekeeper, professor, farmer and entrepreneur. He is Professor of Computer Science at Appalachian State University teaching computer science and working on honey bee projects including the Bee Informed Partnership.  He owns Faith Mountain Farm, a family farm that includes a sideliner beekeeping operation. James is founder and CEO of Hive Tracks, serving the technology needs of beekeepers worldwide.

Hive Tracks is a reliable, ubiquitous platform supporting all levels of beekeeping activity; from backyard hobbyists, to sideliners, to large commercial bee producers and pollinators. The data and information captured will lead to a deeper understanding of real-time and predictive honey bee health and the linkage to global food security.

This event is hosted weekly during the academic year by the Department of Biology in the College of Arts and Sciences at Appalachian State University.
