"I am a Registered Environmental Health Specialist for North Carolina. I enjoy hiking/backpacking and caving. When hiking, I like to identify interesting mushrooms, plants, trees, and rocks/minerals (so I am a slow hiker). I have a large rock and mineral collection and enjoy reading about science and philosophy."

"Allow yourself to fail. We learn by doing and often that entails making mistakes, so make sure to extend the grace you'd give others to yourself as well."

"When I'm not teaching and providing feedback on student work, I love to garden. Seeing things grow (students' skills, plants) seems to be a main theme in my life."

I don’t have much time for this work nowadays, but I still love birds and hope to renew it once my dissertation is written."

"My first book of poetry, All the Great Territories (SIU), won the Weatherford Award from the Appalachian Studies Association and my second, Daniel Boone's Window (LSU) was selected for the Southern Messenger Poets series. I am currently at work on a third collection of poetry, applying to fellowships, writing, and spending time in the woods when I can."

Why Appalachian?
"I wanted to teach somewhere with a diverse group of students eager to think about how social issues are affected by our social identities. I was also looking for colleagues (both students and faculty) willing to collaborate on asking: How can we use social science to make the world a better place? App State is that place!"
What is something interesting about yourself?
"I really like folk music. I'm a hobby musician and play several instruments. I'm excited to learn about the music and history of this Appalachian area."
What is the best advice you were ever given or advice you like to share with your students?
"Expect to feel uncomfortable sometimes. Inequality and injustice are not comfortable subjects to discuss."
