From App State to Asheboro, Geobago brings hands-on education to K–12 students across North Carolina

BOONE, N.C. — This fall, Appalachian State University has once again rolled out its Geobago recreational vehicle to bring hands-on science activities to K–12 students in Western North Carolina and beyond.

Dr. Martie Thompson, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Distinguished Endowed Professor of Public Health in App State's Department of Public Health and Exercise Science; Dr. Manan Roy, associate professor in App State's Department of Nutrition and Health Care Management; and Dr. Maggie Sugg, associate professor in App State's Department of Geography and Planning, received a four-year grant totaling $549,290 from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The 1.5-meter telescope housed in the University of the Free State’s Boyden Observatory in South Africa. App State professor emeritus and astrophysicist Dr. Richard Gray designed and built a spectrograph for the telescope, which he installed and commissioned this spring.
