Nicole Herrera Marchena

Position: CAS Office Assistant
Program of Study: Nutrition and Foods (Dietetics)

Which clubs or organizations are you a member of?

"I am part of the Cultural Ambassadors program on campus that aims to promote diversity, inclusion and intercultural understanding among students."

What research or coursework have you been most passionate about?

"Community Nutrition has been a big motivator in choosing my major and future career path. Proper nutrition education and public health initiatives have been a focus of mine especially when aiming to promote healthier lifestyles in underserved populations. Behavioral Nutrition has also been an interest of mine since being able to understand the psychological and social factors that influence eating habits can help lead to effective strategies when trying to promote healthier lifestyle and nutrition choices."

Tell us about one faculty or staff member that has made an impact on your life and how.

"Everyone in the Dean's Office has contributed to creating a positive atmosphere. Their genuine care for students not only makes it enjoyable to work with them but also significantly reduces the stress that often comes with college life and student jobs. The supportive environment has not only helped me academically but has also contributed to my overall wellbeing. I truly appreciate their impact on my journey here at App State."

Where is your favorite place on campus and why?

"I will always enjoy being able to be a part of nature even if I have just a few minutes in between classes or a project. Durham Park is close to main campus but still gives me a relaxed environment in which to enjoy some quiet nature time when my days are really stressful."

What is one of your favorite memories at Appalachian thus far?

"I'm an international student from the Dominican Republic, so my favorite memory may seem a bit simple. My first impression of the Appalachian mountains was special to me; I couldn't believe I was studying abroad in such a beautiful place."

What are your hobbies?

"I can always enjoy a nice hike, playing my violin or singing. I also enjoy many 'old soul' activities like sewing, reading, talking and making herbal concoctions."

What is your favorite book, podcast, artist, and/or television show?

"I can always enjoy a good mystery podcast or some classical music. I love the 1985 Anne of Green Gables films."

What do you hope to do after graduation?

"I don't have a set plan on what I will do yet but hopefully, I can continue my education getting my master's in Dietetics!"

Kelley Robinson

Kelley Robinson

Position: CAS Office Assistant
Program of Study: Elementary Education (Math, Science and Technology)

Which clubs or organizations are you a member of?

  • Alpha Omicron Pi (Director of Chapter Property)

  • Appalachian Community of Education Scholars

  • Appalachian Educators Club

  • Fraternity and Sorority Life Board (Director of Member Development)

What research or coursework have you been most passionate about?

"One of the most interesting classes I have taken thus far has been EDU 2100. This course looks at how components of gender, social class, race, ethnicity and sexual orientation affect students' educational experiences and trajectories. As a future teacher, I want to provide my students with the best educational experience possible, and this class opened my eyes to so many different ways I can teach, interact with students and families and provide students with resources they need to succeed."

Tell us about one faculty or staff member that has made an impact on your life and how.

"Mary Reeder, director of the Appalachian Community of Education Scholars program, has had such a positive impact on my life. Mary was one of the first faculty members I met on campus and made App State feel like home right away. Freshman year she constantly checked in, celebrated wins with me and was there for advice when needed. Mary is truly such a bright light. There is a reason why she has earned the nickname 'Mama Mary.' Mary is the best mentor I could have asked for coming into college, and I always look forward to seeing her at events and meeting with her one-on-one every year."

Where is your favorite place on campus and why?

"My favorite place on campus is Sanford Mall. It is at the heart of campus and if the weather is nice, you see students doing homework and playing yard games. When it snows, everyone flocks to Sanford to go sledding. Throughout the year you also can find countless organizations on Sanford hosting philanthropy events, donation drives, etc. Sanford Mall is a great reminder of the beautiful community App State offers students."

What is one of your favorite memories at Appalachian thus far?

"One of my favorite memories at Appalachian thus far is my time spent in my sorority participating in philanthropy events or sisterhoods. Getting to spend time with friends who have become sisters and growing closer together while helping the community has been amazing."

What are your hobbies?

"I enjoy spending time with friends, baking, going on drives, cycling and attending sporting events."

What is your favorite book, podcast, artist, and/or television show?

"My favorite television show is Dancing with the Stars. I grew up watching this show and it has become even more special to me since being in college because all my friends and I gather together every Tuesday night to watch each two-hour episode. It has definitely become my comfort show."

What do you hope to do after graduation?

"After graduation, I intend to participate in App State's Accelerated Master's program, obtaining my master's degree in either higher education or special education."
