Retirement Reception for Dr. Patricia Allen and Dr. Richard Gray

BOONE, N.C. — The Appalachian State University Department of Physics and Astronomy invites faculty, staff, students and alumni to celebrate Dr. Patricia Allen and Dr. Richard Gray, who are retiring this year after a combined 67 years of service to the University. The retirement reception will take place on Wednesday, May 31, 2023, from 3-5 p.m. in the Plemmons Student Union Solarium.
Allen, professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, is retiring after 33 years of working in the College of Arts and Sciences. She earned her Ph.D. in Physics from Iowa State University and joined the Department of Physics and Astronomy in 1990. Her research is in the field of scanning probe microscopy.
Gray, professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy and fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, is retiring after 34 years of working in the College of Arts and Sciences. Prior to joining the Department of Physics and Astronomy in 1989, Gray received his Ph.D. in Astronomy from the University of Toronto and completed postdoctoral research at the University of Copenhagen. His research is in the field of stellar spectroscopy.
