 THEN:

During her time at Appalachian, the support Goodall received from colleagues and professors was what she felt ensured her success. Goodall believes the level of support she received contributed to the smooth transition she felt once beginning her first year of studying for her Ph.D. The professors whom she worked directly with, that impacted her academic experiences the most include (but are not limited to), Dr. Beth Campbell, Dr. Karl Campbell, Dr. Sheila Phipps, Dr. Jari Eloranta, Dr. Rebekkah Watkins and Dr. Andrea Burns.

“I wouldn’t be where I am without my Appalachian State family! They believed in me and helped me to believe in myself. I felt completely prepared going from Appalachian’s M.A. program to my Ph.D. program.”

Some classes that Goodall notes as having shaped her academic experience included Museum Management, Intro to Museum Studies and European Imperialism.

Goodall remarks that she will always be grateful for the friendships she made at Appalachian and the professors who became lifelong mentors.

NOW:

Goodall currently teaches history and public history courses as an assistant professor at Stevenson University. She appreciates honesty, compassion and a dedication to students in her colleagues.

“I love watching my students engage with primary sources and draw their own conclusions about historical events.”

Goodall advises current and future students to seek out scholarships, fellowships or teaching assistantships that can help pay for graduate programs so that the stress of finances won’t affect productivity. She also recommends finding a mentor as soon as you can, so they can guide, support and offer direction throughout your academic career. Lastly, she suggests that getting to know your cohort can build collegiality and lead to personal connections and support within an academic field that is usually full of competition.

“There’s enough competition in this world. Be supportive instead,” said Goodall.
