Walker College to offer Summer STEM program for girls

Appalachian State University will offer Aspire IT, a summer outreach program that aims to increase diverse students' awareness about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education and career paths July 23-30, 2018.

Aspire IT is part of the new Innovate for Good initiative, founded by Lakshmi Iyer, program director for the Master of Science in Applied Data Analytics program and a professor of information systems in Appalachian's Walker College of Business, to promote interdisciplinary and collaborative activities to arrive at innovative solutions to address social problems.

The camp is for rising sixth through ninth grade girls. Additionally, rising grades tenth through twelfth grade girls can volunteer and, based on their service and continued leadership in STEM programs, may be nominated by program leaders for the National Center for Women in IT Aspire IT award.

Aspire IT program dates are July 23 - 30, 2018. Campers may select either day-camp (8:30 am to 4.45 pm daily) or residential option. Participants staying on campus will check-in on Sunday, July 22 between 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.
