CAS Students Earn Top 3 Awards at Fall 2022
3-Minute Thesis Competition


The Cratis D. Williams School of Graduate Studies held the eleventh annual “3 Minute Thesis (3MT)” competition on Friday, October 28. For the competition, graduate students explain their research or scholarly/creative projects in jargon-free language to a general "lay" audience in three minutes with the help of only one static slide. Of the 21 participants in this year's 3MT competition, 17 were in CAS. Additionally, CAS students earned the top three awards. Read more.
App State Defeats UNCG at First BioBlitz Competition

App State dominated the biodiversity challenge throughout the whole week, coming out on top with a total of 806 species observed, while UNCG finished with 235 species. Read more.
Physics and Astronomy Students, Faculty Receive NC Space Grants

Three students and a faculty member in the Department of Physics and Astronomy received 2022-23 NASA-funded NC Space Grants to conduct research relating to aerospace and aviation fields. Read more.
Judaic, Holocaust and Peace Studies Students Travel to Israel

From May 21-29, 5 students embarked on a journey from North Carolina to Israel through the generous support of the Greensboro Jewish Federation's Brenner Holocaust Education Scholarship Fund. Read more.

Alumni Spotlight: Psychology Alumna Laura Yates Clark '99
As the President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of United Way of Central Carolinas, College of Arts and Sciences alumna Laura Yates Clark '99 leads the effort to improve economic mobility in communities across Anson, Cabarrus, Mecklenburg and Union counties. Clark earned her Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Appalachian State University and her Master of Arts in Clinical and Community Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC). Her passion for community betterment has touched lives across North Carolina, demonstrating the lasting impacts of a comprehensive undergraduate education. Read more.
2022 Outstanding Alumni Award:
Dr. Lara Souza '99 '03


Biology alumna Dr. Lara Souza is the 2022 recipient of the CAS Outstanding Alumni Award. An internationally-recognized scholar in the field of climate change ecology, Souza began her career at App State, where she earned a minor in Biology in 1999, followed by a M.S. in Biology in 2003. Read more.

Government and Justice Studies alumnus Mark E. Ricks '89 is the 2022 recipient of App State's Distinguished Alumni Award, which recognizes individuals who have attained extraordinary distinction and success in their career field and have demonstrated exceptional and sustained leadership in their community. Read more.

Douglas Middleton Jr. ’15 ’18


Government and Justice Studies alumnus Douglas Middleton Jr. ’15 ’18 is the recipient of App State’s 2022 Young Alumni Award, which honors individuals under 40 years of age for their exceptional service to the university and accomplishments in their career. Read more.
